Diary of a Fairy Godmother by Esmé Raji Codel

When I started to read this book, it sounded familiar, and about two chapters into it I realized I had read it before.  I finished it anyway.  It is a cute book.  Hunky Dory is a young witch who is at the head of her class in "charm" school. Then one day she get the opportunity to grant a wish, and discovers she likes "wish" craft more than "witch" craft. Against the wishes of her mother, teacher, and friends, she becomes a fairy godmother instead of a witch. Even though this is a short book, aimed at 3rd or 4th graders, it has some complex ideas.  How much do you sacrifice to follow your dream?  Which are more dangerous, wishes or curses?  How do you decide whether to give someone what they want, or what they really need?  It also has a couple of mature themes.  At one point the mother talks about witches and warlocks "shacking up."  The book doesn't explain what they might mean, and it would probably go over a child's head, but as an adult reading the book, it made my eyebrows go up. That was really the only really questionable part.  I did find it funny that the witches called having a baby the "one handed curse" because for the next few years the mother can only use one hand because they are holding the baby in the other.  (170 p)
