The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan

I really liked the "Perseus Jackson" series, but I didn't care for The Red PyramidThe Lost Hero is the first book in a sister series to "Perseus Jackson,"  continuing where that series left off.  It is very much like The Lightning Thief.  A boy, Jason, wakes up on a school bus, holding hands with a cute girl, and has no memories of who he is or where he is.  Fairly soon he is attacked by monsters, and he, the girl, Piper, and a side kick, Leo, are whisked off to Camp Half Blood.  They are, of course, claimed by their divine parents and sent on a quest to save one of the gods and to prevent the emergence of a power even older and more menacing than the Olympians.  Sound familiar? Even though the characters and plot are a rewrite of the older book, I still really liked it. Riordan introduced some interesting elements that tickled my fancy.  He brings up the issue of the similarities and differences between the Greek and Roman pantheon. Being a Latin reader and classical scholar (chuckle) the treatment of the topic intrigued me and I am eager to read the next one in the series, The Son of Neptune.(576 p)
